CLINICAL PRACTICUM OPTIONS:

Traditional Practicum:

A 50-hr clinical practicum with an approved preceptor is required to complete each Scope of Practice.  A full scope of practice requires 150 hours of experience with the preceptor.

Practicum Portfolio Evaluation:

NEW and offered exclusively from webWOC:  A 50-hr clinical practicum with a preceptor meeting the requirements of the WOCN is required to complete each Scope of Practice.  A full scope of practice requires 150 hours of experience with the preceptor. (These requirements have not changed.) For more information, please see attached:  Portfolio Additional Information

Who will find this Option useful?

  • Learners who plan to complete a clinical practicum in their employment setting.
  • Learners completing clinical in a facility that prefers a letter of agreement to a formal contract.
  • Learners who are internationally based are ideal candidates for this practicum option because a formal contract between the University and the clinical setting is not required.

Flexible, saves time and legal expenses.  The sequence of when the learner registers for this course is different from the traditional practicum.  The learner is not registered at the University while completing the clinical practicum with the preceptor.  After successfully completing the core courses, the learner completes the clinical practicum and a portfolio.  When the portfolio is ready for review, the learner registers for the course and the faculty evaluates the practicum portfolio.

LOCATING PRECEPTORS:

The webWOC Program is here to support learners when identifying potential preceptors.  While learners are responsible for identifying potential preceptors, we can help you!  Most webWOC learners are able to find preceptors in large medical centers near home, but occasionally learners have to travel to access a preceptor or facility.  The Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurses Society Member Directory may also be a useful resource. The Directory is not affiliated with the webWOC Nursing Education Program or Metropolitan State University.

Be prepared to work around the preceptor's schedule vs asking the preceptor to work around your schedule.

Contact preceptors at least 2-3 months prior to when you expect to complete your didactic courses and begin your clinical hours.

Be prepared to work around the preceptor's schedule vs. asking the preceptor to work around your schedule.

We recommend that you plan to spend at least 2-3 days per week with your preceptor, so the progress of a patient can be noted over multiple visits.

Full Scope learners should plan to complete their clinical hours one semester (approximately 16 weeks) after completing theory.

Approximately 80% of our learners report that they do not pay preceptors for their time in the clinical practicum. However, many preceptors do charge for that service. Any financial arrangements made between the preceptor and learner is separate from the webWOC Nursing Education and not included in the listed program costs.
