Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course focuses on the care of the client across the lifespan who has an ostomy or continent diversion.  Specifically, the learner will gain knowledge of the diseases or conditions that may result in an ostomy or continent diversion, assessment and perioperative management of these patients. Emphasis is placed on complications of the stoma and skin, risk assessment, prevention, identification and management. Best practice is frequently the level of research in this field of study.  That knowledge will be presented in order to improve the nurse’s knowledge and client outcomes.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: 

·         Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Nursing

The purpose of this course is to prepare learners to provide evidence-based, collaborative, and holistic care for clients across the lifespan who have or may require an ostomy or continent diversion, including perioperative management, complication prevention, patient education, and long-term support.
