Urinary Catheters: Risks and Best Practices for Prevention of UTIs

The purpose of this educational activity is to enable the nurse generalist to the advanced practitioner level to identify and prevent catheter associated urinary tract infections.

Following this presentation, the participant will be able to:
Identify the types and causes of neurogenic bladder and management of urinary retention and urinary incontinence.
Describe the methods of urinary catheterization: indwelling urinary catheter, intermittent catheterization, and external catheters.
List the components of the different urinary catheters.
Identify common complications seen with the three types of catheterization.
Classify catheter associated urinary tract infections.
Detail nursing strategies to prevent catheter associated urinary tract infections.

This content is delivered as an enduring material activity which is provider-directed, learner-paced and consists of handouts and test questions. To receive contact hours, the participant must complete all learning activities including the entire online program, an assessment quiz with a passing score of 80% and the course evaluation. Following completion of these materials, the participant is able to print the certificate of completion.
