WE GOT THE BEAT- GO-GO’s

Using this song theme, Deb Netsch (Co-Director), Sue Bruch (Faculty) and JoAnn Ermer-Seltun (President, Co-Director) ‘Got the Beat’ and made their first LIVE appearance as “Connectionists” at a lunch symposium, “WOC & Roll Ostomy Connections: We Got the Beat!

What’s a ‘Connectionist’? It’s an ostomy nurse specialist who recognizes and facilitates vital connections for the person with an ostomy to promote and return to optimal health and wellness! They identified four vital connections: 1) Patient and their Ostomy, 2) Patient and their Healthcare Team, 3) Body Contours and Pouching System and 4) Living with an Ostomy and Optimal State of Wellness. The presentation highlighted four Ostomy Hall of Famers who shared their personal stories (videos) on missed or optimal Connections during their ostomy journey as a patient or support person. All participants were awarded a “Connectionist” ribbon to wear proudly during the WOCNext conference. Let’s Get the Beat in helping our patients with an ostomy…

MOTOWN ‘ABC’- JACKSON 5

Unfortunately, the foley catheter used today has not changed much since Dr. Frederick Foley’s 1933 design. The literature notes ~70% of catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs) are preventable which would result in 380,000 fewer infections and 9,000 fewer deaths annually.  Wow! JoAnn enticed the audience to remove ‘habit-based’ catheter care to ‘evidence-based’ prevention and management strategies through a ‘Bundled Approach’ endorsed by the CDC and other national guidelines or experts. She shared multiple examples of successful CAUTI Prevention Programs that were easy as “A,B,C, easy as 1,2,3, simple as do, ra, mi… show me what you can do” as well as what is new or on the horizon to reduce catheter associated complications.

ENCORE- OOPS, WE DID IT AGAIN- BRITTANY SPEARS:

Background: WEB WOC developed a 100% virtual WOC nursing clinical practicum so learners could pursue the specialty when the onsite practicum was impossible during Covid. Well, OOPS, authors Bonnie Sue Rolstad (Founder), Debra Netsch, JoAnn Ermer-Seltun & Sue Bruch DID IT AGAIN with a follow-up practice innovation poster titled “BARRIERS TO ACCESS of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) NURSE SPECIALTY EDUCATION:  A COVID-19 REFLECTION”. It reported the reasons learners selected the VCP and whether they would choose it again even if COVID was not relevant. Interestingly, 52.75% selected VCP because they were having difficulty locating a preceptor … NOT a clinical facility. Certainly, finding a qualified preceptor is a barrier to accessing specialty education. In addition, can you believe 93% stated they would do the VCP again even if COVID was not relevant! The poster explored 296 students and faculty appraisal of the VCP over a 2-year period.
